Access to information
On 1 July 2010, the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (GIPA Act) replaced the Freedom of Information Act 1989 (FOI).
Government Information Public Access (GIPA) is the right to information and is the presumption in favour of the disclosure of government information unless there is an overriding public interest against disclosure. The GIPA Act 2009 establishes a comprehensive system for public access to government information.
This new legislation is designed to:
- authorize and encourage the proactive release of information,
- giving members of the public an enforceable right to obtain government information, and
- only restricting access to government information when there is an overriding public interest against disclosure.
